Dr. SEELA ALADUWAKA

Research Fellow
Dr Seela Aladuwaka is a Member of the Board of Management and Research
Fellow of GV. She is a Senior Lecturer, The Department of Geography,
University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. Currently she is attached to
the Department of Global Gender Studies as a Visiting Scholar and
adjunct professor (email:seelaa@buffalo.edu). She was also Assistant
Director (Research) at the International Center for Ethnic Studies
(ICES), Kandy, Sri Lanka from January 2007 to April 2008.
Dr Aladuwaka won a Fulbright scholar to USA, got her master’s
degree from American University, Washington DC. and her Ph.D. from
West Virginia University. Her dissertation research focused on micro-credit,
poverty alleviation and women’s empowerment in rural Sri Lanka.
Her special areas of research include gender and development with
special emphasis on poverty and microcredit. In her research, she
focuses women’s work in the informal sector especially in
South Asian environments. She also works on issues related to gender
and health with special focus on HIV and female workers in plantation
communities in Sri Lanka. Her research also extends to Social Impact
Assessment in EIA.
She has been principal researcher on various projects funded by
The Asia Foundation and International Union for Conservation of
Nature (IUCN), Sri Lanka, on issues related to women and environment.
Women’s participation in sustainable development has been
one of her research areas where she has conducted field research
related to water resource managements in Sri Lanka. At ICES she
was involved in a wide range of research projects including one
on “HIV/AIDS Knowledge and Attitudes in High Risk Groups in
Sri Lanka.” Dr. Aladuwaka has been actively engaged in several
development projects in Sri Lanka, with especial attention to issues
of gender in relocations and displaced communities. She has also
done research on Tsunami in Sri Lanka, focusing on livelihood development,
housing construction, and gender. Her latest publications include
“Geographic Perspective of Safe Motherhood in the Hill Country
of Sri Lanka” in Marriage & Family Review, Vol.44, Issue
2/3 in 2008. Her book “Credit, Poverty Alleviation and Women’s
Empowerment” is will be released later this year.
