Dr. Ekanayake is a member of the Board of Management and a Consultant
of Global Vision. He was an International Civil Servant serving
the UN for nearly a decade in Central Asia in the capacity of Basic
Education Advisor for UNESCO and UNHCR from 1994 to 2002. Apart
from developing an educational policy framework for Afghanistan,
his protocol included developing education programmes and materials
for trainers serving schools in refugee camps and disadvantaged
groups. He was also a Consultant Researcher for UNICEF in Bhutan
on a project studying primary educational issues in that country.
He worked as a Research Fellow at the UNESCO Institute of Lifelong
Education, Hamburg where he developed a ‘Lifelong Educational
Framework’ for developing countries.
While in Sri Lanka he was the Director, Non-Formal and Technical
Education at the National Institute of Education where he introduced
innovative approaches to education in the context of development
of youth in disadvantaged groups. He was also the Education Consultant
on human rights extension programmes at the Centre for the Study
of Human Rights (CSHR) at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka.
While in the UN Dr. Ekanayake functioned as a trainer on human rights
for Central Asia.
His expertise is also related to training of personnel in education
and rural development, teacher education and non-formal education.
He also served as the Technical Advisor to GTZ Education Project
for refugees in Pakistan, the world’s largest UNHCR funded
project. Later he was the Coordinator of the first Refugee Education
Project of CIDA, Pakistan. He has served in international evaluation
teams related to educational and development projects funded by
UNHCR, The World Bank, CIDA, Plan International, GTZ, and NORAD.
He also serves as an honorary reviewer of professional papers for
organizations such as IIEP.
Dr. Ekanayake has published nearly 100 articles in reputed international
journals, in addition to 25 books on education and teacher training.
