Sanji Gunasekara
Research Fellow
Sanji Gunasekara is a Research Fellow at GV. He is currently a
Senior Policy Analyst at the New Zealand Drug Foundation. He has
previously worked as a researcher at the New Zealand Defence Force
and as a policy officer at the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs
and Trade. Between October 2007 and February 2008, he was a Visiting
Research Fellow at the ICES, Kandy, and was involved in a project
that evaluated knowledge of HIV/AIDS in the military. He has a number
of years of experience in scientific and medical communications
in New Zealand and in the United Kingdom. He has also worked as
a freelance writer and has been a regular contributor to travelsrilanka
magazine.
Sanji originally trained in Medicine at the University of Auckland,
obtaining a Bachelor of Human Biology (BHB) in 1992 and a Bachelor
of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) in 1995. He also obtained
a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health (PGDipPH) from the University
of Auckland in 2004. Deciding to pursue his long standing interest
in international affairs, he went on to undertake a Masters of International
Relations (MIR) at Victoria University, Wellington, in which he
focused on the international dimensions to the conflict in Sri Lanka.
He obtained his MIR (with distinction) in 2006. His research interests
are diverse and include postcolonial perspectives in international
relations, migration and identity politics, and the socioeconomic
determinants of health. He also has a strong personal interest in
sustainable development, conservation and eco-tourism in Sri Lanka.
