Dr. RAM ALAGAN

Research Fellow
Dr. Ram Alagan is a Member of the Board of Management and Research
Fellow at GV. He is a Senior Lecturer in Geography at the University
of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. Currently, he is visiting scholar and
adjunct professor both at the University at Buffalo in New York
and Indiana State University, Indiana.
Dr Alagan took his Ph.D. from West Virginia University in 2007.
He obtained his MA in Geography from Ohio University in 1996 as
a Fulbright Scholar and spent an additional year on Environmental
Studies at OU in 1997. He is a Research Fellow at the Center for
Environmental Studies at the University of Peradeniya; Senior GIS
Consultant for International Union for Conservation of Nature (ICUN),
Sri Lanka as well as for Plan Sri Lanka. He also serves as Secretary,
Voice of Hantana, an Environmental NGO.
Dr. Alagan’s research and teaching interests include Environmental
Impact Assessment, Geographic Information Science, Participatory
GIS, Community Mapping, Natural Resource Management, Natural Disaster
Studies, Regional Geography, and Sri Lanka Environment. He has been
a researcher and consultant in these fields for several major international
and Sri Lankan organizations. He has also published scientific papers
on these topics.
He is also good sportsman. He played for the national soccer team
of Sri Lanka and is also a good cricket player. He also serves as
Sports Advisor, University of Peradeniya
Dr Alagan is dedicated to work for peace, community development,
and youth welfare. He is Vice President, of the Lions Club of Hill
Capital Kandy Lions International District 306C.
