Dr. Rajeewa Suresh Jayasinghe

Rajeewa Suresh Jayasinghe is a Research Fellow at GV. He read for his junior and senior high at Trinity College Kandy, Sri Lanka. He obtained the highest aggregate for the Humanities and Social Sciences at his College and was selected to the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka to read for an Honours Degree in History in 1987. He obtained a First Class in History (Summa Cum Laude) in 1992 and was recruited to the Department of History of the University of Peradeniya in 1993. In 1996, he was selected for a Fulbright Scholarship to the University of Texas at Austin to read for an MA in History at the Department of Asian Studies. Having returned in mid 1998 with an MA from the United States, he was again selected on a SAARC Scholarship to pursue his Doctoral Studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in 2000. He returned to the University of Peradeniya in mid 2003 with a Ph.D. in History and since then has been teaching courses in Sri Lankan History, European History, Indian History and Colonialism. He is also engaged in a programme that teaches and assists American College students in the Intercollegiate Sri Lanka Education (ISLE) Programme affiliated with the University of Peradeniya. He is also involved in teaching American undergraduates American History, National Government and International Relations at the American College of Higher Education that is affiliated to some universities in the United States. Since of late he is involved in consultancies with Transparency International (TI) Colombo, Sri Lanka and the Open University of Sri Lanka.

• Presented a Paper titled Civil Society in Sri Lanka: Strengths and Weaknesses at the Peradeniya University Research Sessions (PURSE) held at the Faculty of Science, 18th December 2008

• Presented a paper titled An Introduction to Conflict Studies at the 4th Conference of the Association for the Study of Australasia in Asia (ASAA) held at Hotel Suisse, Kandy, 2nd – 5th December 2008

• Presented a paper titled Evolution of the Ethnic Conflict in Sri Lanka: Historical Perspectives in an International Workshop titled “Ethnicity in Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Thailand: Historical Perspectives and Contemporary Issues” in Bangkok at Chulalongkorn University & Ubon Rajathanee University in Thailand, September 5th-9th, 2007

• Presented a paper titled Sri Lanka’s Foreign Relations in the Context of Violent Conflict (Co-author S W R de A Samarasinghe) in an International Conference titled “Violent Conflict, Terrorism and Nation Building: National and International Responses in Sri Lanka and other South Asian Countries” in Kandy at Hotel Citadel, Sri Lanka, August 3-4, 2007

• Attended an International Conference titled Civil Society & Democratic Space in South Asia: Civic Interactions, Economic Development and Regional Peace in New Delhi, India, organized by the Centre for Policy Affairs, January 2006. Title of the paper presented: Regional Disparity and Civil Society in Sri Lanka.
